A genealogy is a more formal name for a family tree that traces relationships through birth and marriage. The Bishmizzine Genealogy is a huge family tree of all the main families of the village. it was started in 1939 by a Bishmizzini named Afif Ishaq Tannous, and was adopted as a project by me, Patricia Nabti, in 1985, as part of my doctoral research on Bishmizzine emigration. As of December 16, 2022, there were 5,944 names in the Genealogy and it is still growing as new information is provided and babies are born. The Genealogy is now on Ancestry.com as "Bishmizzine Families - Patricia M Nabti", as well as on my personal computer (using Family Tree Maker). The Ancestry tree name includes my name as the primary founder, contributor, and editor of the tree – but it is a tree for all the people of Bishmizzine ancestry, wherever you live. And with your help, we can expand and improve it.

Putting the tree on Ancestry.com is a major development for the Bishmizzine Heritage Initiative. It is currently listed as a “private” tree on Ancestry, meaning that it is not available for the general public to view. We are only giving those of Bishmizzine heritage access to view and search the almost 6000 names in the tree. This is our information and we need to seriously consider whether we ever want to openly share it with the public, even if we would exclude them from viewing living people. Because of that, you will need to request a link, which will be given to anyone of Bishmizzine heritage.

As a Contributor, you will be able to search all names, living and dead, and add comments, photos, and stories. You will not be able to add or delete names or edit personal information, but you can suggest changes by adding comments and I can then make the changes. If there are a lot of changes, we can arrange a personal meeting to add them in real time, or you can send me your family tree that provides that information.

I have prepared a guide that will explain a lot of basic information about the genealogy – why it was started, what sources have been used, and how it works. This information is available in Arabic  This information, plus a guide to how to view the genealogy/tree on Ancestry.com and make contributions is available only in English, since the tree and Ancestry itself are only in English. The genealogy is in English so that people of Bishmizzine heritage throughout the world can view it. You do not need to read the Guide to get a link to the genealogy on Ancestry.com, but I encourage you to do so before you view it on Ancestry.
